In November, the Ministry of Justice announced plans to change the fees families must pay to administer the estate of someone who has died.
This process, known as Probate, involves gathering the assets of the deceased, valuing the estate, paying any tax and bills and distributing the estate according to the will.
The proposals have now received parliamentary approval and will come into force from 1 April 2019. They will apply only in England and Wales.
A sliding scale of fees will replace the current flat rate fee of £215 and the minimum estate value for paying the fee will increase from £5,000 to £50,000. The new fees will be:
Assessed value of estate Amount of fee
£50,000 – £300,000 £250
£300,000 – £500,000 £750
£500,000 – £1 million £2,500
£1 million – £1.6 million £4,000
£1.6 million – £2 million £5,000
£2 million + £6,000
